Meal plan Monday

The first week of meal planning was a success! No more wondering what's for dinner, and leftovers take care of lunch. The homemade pizza was surprisingly delicious, even with the part whole wheat crust and homemade sauce. We are going to make it a regular thing and have it every Friday.

Two things I discovered for the first time ever this week: cooking with yeast (apparently yeast is killed with water temps over 120. Now I know!), and cooking with ground turkey in place of ground beef. I used it in the enchiladas and it tasted great to us. I'll be using that more!

So here's our menu for this week...

Monday: Chicken Curry in a Hurry, over brown rice.
Tuesday: Crock Pot Chili.
Wednesday: Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese and veggie
Thursday: Red Lentil Soup and corn bread
Friday: Home made pizza
Saturday: Breakfast for dinner
Sunday: this day is relaxed. We eat whatever leftovers might still be in the fridge or a cheese. fruit and cracker plate.

New tactic

Jason found this one on the web and its going up immediately. Nothing irritates me more than having someone come to my home, my sanctuary, unsolicited and asking for money.

Dscn1895

He is way too nice and ends up wasting a lot of time talking to them, almost leading them on in a way. And I am way too mean.

A nice young looking girl came to the door today...

her: It looks like your windows are newer?
me: so (blank stare)

When I get a solicitation call I simply hang up by the time they get half a sentence out, but shutting the door on someone without saying a word is a bit more difficult. We've tried not answering at all, but the kids are loud and the knocking goes on for longer than I'd expect.

This neighborhood seems to attract solicitors every day, and I think I've already mentioned my feelings of creepiness toward the ice cream trucks? That music can be heard for an hour at a time some evenings!

August 7, 2007

oops

I got a ring at the door this morning, just before 9:00am and my first thought was what kind of cajones this solicitor has to ignore my sweet new sign. But it was the neighbor letting me know one of my naughty red chickens had escaped and was across the street. Yep, there she was, doing her little chicken walk in a neighbor's front yard.

And, of course it would be Drumstick, who NEVER lets me get close enough to pick up. She's fast too! Jason and I corralled her back through the gate and saw that the yard debris bin was too close to the fence and she hopped right onto it and out the other side. We might not have figured that out, had she not left a little stinky clue sitting right on top of the bin.

Here she is giving me the eye...

Meal Plan Monday 8/13/07

Monday: Talapia, Rice a roni, veggie
Tuesday: Navy bean chowder (crock pot) and cheese rolls (gasp!)
Wednesday: Natalie's enchilada's with ground turkey, and spanish rice
Thursday: The "Momlette"
Friday: Homemade pizza
Saturday: Crock pot chili (the other half of last weeks recipe I stuck in the freezer)

I think I'll start adding in the snack foods we make too. (last week was banana bread and oatmeal cookies, and the week before that was zucchini bread). This week will be:

Big soft pretzels, and we still have the "stay fresh oatmeal cookies"
We also have a big watermelon we are eating away at.

I'm not sure if its all this nummy food we're eating or what, but I've hit a plateau in my weight loss for a couple weeks now. I am a calorie counter and have religiously documented every morsel and stayed within my range. <sigh> I would hate to have to lower my cals any more, but it may be what I have to do.

Easing back into work

I've been picking up some more hours at the hospital and its time to start getting the photography word out there again. I had a session tonight and it was a blast. It just boggles my mind to be able to provide a service that does not feel like work at all. It is such a pleasure!

Meal plan Monday 8/20/07

This week will be a little different, since Simon and I are flying to Toronto on Thursday. My little bro Aaron is getting married and we will be there until Sunday night. I'll have a tough time keeping it healthy while I'm away. There's a Subway in every country, eh?

Monday...pork and beef burgers with no-mayo potato salad.
Tuesday...crock pot chili (saved from last week since I have to work)
Wednesday...Lentil Loaf
Thursday...spaghetti
Friday...homemade pizza
Saturday...tuna pasta salad (with whole wheat pasta)
Sunday...Jason and the kids eat out at Red Robin before coming to pick me up at the airport.

Good times in Toronto!

It was a whirlwind trip, but worth the effort to see my brother Aaron and his wife Samantha get hitched at her parent's beautiful bed and breakfast home in the country.

It was like a showcase wedding out of a Home and Gardens issue, with an outdoor ceremony and a beautiful reception in a huge barn, decked out with tables and linens, a huge pig roasting just outside, and relaxing tunes. It was quite emotional at times and good to get acquainted with Sam's fun loving family.

While Sam was hiding in her dress, before the wedding, we snapped a photo of the parentals, and 4 of the 5 "kids" plus Simon. Chris didn't make the trip, so maybe I can paste his mug in later? ;)

My sister and Simon and I stayed in the family's cabin by the river and enjoyed the rustic comforts and kayaking that came with it. Once again, I tried to do it up with a girly dress and heeled shoes and backed out in the last minute, opting for comfort. I fear I may be one set away from being a dude. So sad.

Simon really enjoyed the swing. It was nice for a breeze in the humid heat.

Thank you Aundi for capturing me in outdoor sport mode. Its a rare siting.

Dsc 0118Sm-2

My brother Casey and his wife Aundi were with me for the travel and helped me with Simon a lot. They held him quite a bit. Aundi and I were almost always taking pictures at the same time...so here she is in action.

I wanted to mention the wedding first, but the time spent getting there is quite a story in itself. Our stop in Chicago turned into a series of flight delays and a cancelation due to a major lightning and rain storm, which ultimately turned into a major power outage and mass exodus of stranded travelers looking for accommodations for the night. All of the hotels were booked and there was no way we were staying in the airport all night with a baby.

We ended up finding a room through Expedia, only to find out the hotel had no power...no back up lighting, no phones, no flashlights. The shuttle brought us to the blackened building and we used the light from our cell phones to find our room.

It took several calls to find a pizza place that would deliver that late in the storm. We were in Chicago eating Dominoes pizza in the dark. Dominos in Chicago?! the shame of it all.

To top it off, Simon was still sick and fussing all night and the fire alarm went off at 4am. We had no change of clothes or toiletries. Her I am, haggard and tired, heading back to the airport for the flight to Toronto finally, a day late.

Dsc 0028Sm-1

Oh...and remember my hopes for a Subway? They were everywhere. In fact here is one in plain view of the parking lot we stopped in.

Dsc 0138Sm-1

What parking lot were we in? Oh yeah...this one.

Dsc 0140Sm-1

After four days of eating like a pig...seriously, it was a free for all after 5 months of eating healthy. I came home a jumped on the scale for the moment of truth and saw a whopping 8 new pounds. Can I cry a little now? If the trip were any longer I might need some new furniture like this rocking chair.

My sister and I were appalled they would put out this sweet, gigantic rocking chair and have the nerve to put signs all over it that read "Do not climb on please." Do not climb on??! It took every bit of will power I have to keep myself from jumping right up onto that seat and playing some air guitar.

Dsc 0145Sm-1

Its late and I need to get to bed, but I had to get some photos up to share since I was still wired from the flight. Now can I sleep for two days?

Jackson

Another fun session with little man Jackson and his mama, nearly ready for viewing. He was such a good sport letting me take his photos even though the fun stuff around us was torture for a six year old to see but not be able to really take the time to play on.

Meal Plan Monday 8/27/07

Monday...Tuna pasta salad
Tuesday...Jason wants to grill on the barbie. Veggie burger for me and BYOB for the rest;) Veggie shish-kabobs.

Wednesday...Pancakes with the Canadian maple syrup I got as a wedding favor
Thursday...Lentil loaf

Friday...Homemade pizza
Saturday...I have to work. Maybe a kid friendly mac and cheese? I'l try this crock pot version with some tweaking. No salt and a tad more milk to avoid drying.
Sunday...Momlettes? Those things were GOOOOOOD!

a few more wedding photos...

Weeded through some more...

A couple more from Aundi, while I was kayaking. I thought this perspective was a hoot! He seems so big, but his face peeking out shows how little he still is.

The source of my 8 new pounds. Burrito Beach at the Chicago O'hare airport. It was my emotional support on three separate occasions. :)

It was a beautiful view.

And look how close the river was to the front door. I sorta fell off the porch and into a kayak with my pajama pants still on. I'm on vacation damnit! I can't be bothered to get dressed!

And the back view.

Dsc 0064Sm-1

Sam, rockin' her vows. I managed to hear them over my mom wailing in my right ear. Okay, I was tearing up a bit myself.

Dsc 0031Sm-1

I had a little trouble with my color, but that's what I get for sneaking in a shot while the photographer was distracted with something else.

The barn...fabulous!

We don't mess around. We owned that food table!

A little late on the 5 month weight loss photo

I am officially back to my pre-Simon weight. Go me! Unfortunately, that still leaves me with the 20 extra pounds I was having a heck of a time getting rid of before the surprise party favor; and it seems to be the point at which I have to work harder than my lazy self wants to yet again. But, damnit! I don't want to settle here.

I'm still dragging myself to TOPS every week, so maybe the humiliation of not having a loss at the meeting will at least keep up a slow weight loss to the finish line.

Dsc 0004 Month5Sm

Simon! Look over here at Mommy! No? Okay.

Who's going to donate their piggy bank to buy me a second studio light? How about Xander, who still thinks a pile of pennies is better than a dollar bill. Yes, I think we have found our victim. Muwaahahaha!
