Squeeeeeeee! New bike!

I’ve been scouring Craig’s List for a lighter road bike and finally found a good one. Incredibly, it came with a ton of accessories, including shoes and pedal clips IN MY SIZE. It was meant to be.

I test rode a full road bike with dropped handlebars and discovered it wasn’t for me, at this time. I didn’t like having to drop down for every gear change or braking, especially for all the in town commuting we do. A great compromise was the Trek 7.5 FX with the upright handlebars but the lighter road bike components. Zippy and a perfect fit. The shoes are great too and something I probably never would have bought for myself.

Banks-Vernonia trail

Isaac and I did a section of the Banks-Vernonia trail. As soon as we arrived at the trail head I noticed a flat. An unplanned detour to the tire place ate up a bunch of our afternoon but we still managed to get in 11 miles of riding. Isaac did great and enjoyed all the bunny sightings.

My basket is working out nicely. I picked up this little Game Boy pouch at the thrift store and it Velcros to the basket for great key/phone/wallet storage. The whole set-up is probably going to change again though when I get Lotus on the back and a basket in the front.

Bike love

The calm before the hail storm…

Check out my new milk crate basket. Now I can toss stuff in without fussing over bags sliding around, or at least my bags that were sliding around, and poking into my spokes!

Now I need some fenders. Rain splashing up into my face is not cool.

The usual Easter activities: egg dying and cookie making. We have continued to dye raw eggs, because we don’t need four dozen hard boiled eggs, and not a single egg was cracked in this year’s hunt! I was all set to cook up the cracked eggs for breakfast and not a single incident. Amazing!

All three of my guys are in the same parkour class. “Beginning parkour” was a hit but the current class called “games” should be called “how many ways can we play dodgeball?” It does not really focus on parkour at all. My boys are on the small side and not very aggressive…I’m sure you can imagine how that is going. My mom and I were reminiscing over our own gym class experiences with dodgeball and we both pretended to be hit early on in the game. “I’m out! I’ll just go stand by the wall out of harms way now…” Ha!

We might be taking a break until they can get into the other class again.

Homemade laundry detergent

Finally! At last we have made that batch of laundry detergent I’ve been wanting to make for YEARS. We’ve not had luck with the homemade dishwasher soap and the reviews reflect that. Laundry soap has nothing but rave reviews and now that we’ve gotten past the initial hurdle of making the first batch, I doubt we’ll ever go back.

There are many, many recipes on the ‘net. Try it! Next on my to-do list is homemade soap bars and shampoo bars. I’ve been wanting to do that for years too, but actually have the supplies listed out and priced now. The initial cost is quite a bit more than laundry soap but the supplies will last for multiple batches and we’ll get a lot of soap.

(Ps..we finally removed the baby gate attachments after I noticed them in this photo. It’s funny how we can be completely blind to things in our surroundings after a while. Going from room to room and snapping a photo would help!)

Since I was walking by to get a photo of the laundry soap, I snapped a pic of my guy in his office cave…bringing home the bacon!

A work in progress scene in the morning sun. Xander and I have been discussing art styles and history, and he’s been inspired to start a new painting. What he really needs is a good set of pens!

Winter blues hit again, unwarranted

I think I might be affected by seasonal affective disorder more than I realized. The Spring sun made me so happy and the realization that this is only the teaser we get every year, that will be crushed with many more days of rain and cold, got me depressed again. It’s still sunny out and I am sad just knowing it won’t last.

Actually, I’m realizing I’ve been in hermit mode ever since I gave Facebook the boot last summer. Now, instead of the limited social interactions online, I’ve reduced myself to interacting only with my family. I don’t reach out to friends and, in turn, they don’t reach out to me.

Maybe unschooling, co-sleeping, cooking from scratch, trying to be super-attentive-awesome-mom is zapping it all out of me. I do know, getting off of Facebook made the other things more do-able. Are we not allowed to be supermom *and* have a social life?? I apparently don’t have the energy for it. Ha!

Spring is Springing!

The sunshine is making me so happy! The backyard is getting some play every day with swinging competitions, trampoline games, tricycle rides on the deck and hot-tubbing. I am looking forward to getting the deck cleaned off and having my morning coffee out there again.
