5 Minutes of Christmas Morning

Grandpa Woody and Grandma Vickie visited and brought gifts, hand knits and baked goods. I came home from work to the sounds of RC cars racing around the house and kids squealing. Thanks Woody and Vickie!

Later the RC car boxes were turned into a two level home and puppet theater.

Christmas prep involved these little stocking stuffers from Simon. He even made one for himself so his gift could be anonymous.

I guess he’s a teenager now. The hat was a team effort: I did the knitting and Jason sewed in a liner. Go team Bergeman!

This vintage school house came 100% complete with flashcards and all the magnetic letters and numbers. WHO ARE THESE FAMILIES THAT DON’T LOSE STUFF?????Those parents probably see a Polly Pocket shoe on the floor and don’t continue vacuuming right over it.

Xander and Simon blew up these sumo boppers immediately. Of course I had to squeeze into one and bop some kids around. Xander got a case of the green eyed monster after seeing Isaac’s wizard ball but Simon declared the bopper “best gift ever!”

My aunt Carol got me a neck soother and Omi hooked us up with a jar of homemade apple pie moonshine. You see what I’m doing five minutes after getting home from the party? Jammies and moonshine. It really does taste like apple pie!

Lotus is Four!

Lotus is four today! She woke up to balloons and her gift on the bed and tonight we have our extended family Christmas party, so we’ll bring her cake to share. She is now watching “Grumpy Cat Christmas” for the second time. Good times!

Timberline Lodge

We signed up for this homeschooling trip to Mt Hood a while ago and Simon and I ended up being sick, poor Simon with a double ear infection. But, he still wanted to go and the room was already paid for. Simon and I mostly snoozed the evening away in the hotel room but it was still nice to see the snow and enjoy a cozy meal in the lodge restaurant.

I forgot my camera, so phone pics is the best I could do.

Timberline Lodge was built as part of President FDR’s New Deal back in 1936. It has wonderfully solid woodwork but updated furnishings, throw rugs and Pendleton wool blankets folded over the foot of each bed. The kids got to watch a Christmas movie in one of the community media rooms and then hear a bedtime story. Then we gazed at the piles of snow out the window and watched Lord of the Rings, thanks to a DVD that was left in the TV.

Simon had some baby teeth pulled recently and is sporting the “checkerboard” look. His tooth fairy haul that night was impressive!

The Movies

This was actually from October and I forgot about these photos on my phone. We went to a matinee and had the entire theater to ourselves. We love it when that happens! We were seeing The Book of Life here. Good movie. Not a watch-again-movie but a nice family outing.

A beautiful, cold day at the beach…

I rolled up Lotus’ hat to get it out of her face and she complained, “Now my eyes are cold!”
It’s all about the sand: laying in it, feeling it through our fingers, making footprints, following footprints and writing out words.

Halloween 2014

The rain started to pour outside right after they got their costumes on so the best I could do was a photo in the garage. Ack!

It was a thrift store costume kind of year. Isaac pulled out his pirate costume from last year. We should have given that boy a beard too! Xander is a “killer lumberjack,” Lotus is Raggedy Ann and Simon is a “Dark Lord.” That’s what the label read on the costume: Dark Lord. No clue what that means but he liked it.
With their trick-or-treating buddies, ready to head out .

Learning Japanese

Lotus is enjoying the Japanese language apps on my iPad and I had to capture the adorableness. It’s kinda long and one of those made-for-mom-and-dad videos but I thought I’d put it in the blog because that’s pretty much what my entire blog is. Ha!

We are planning a trip to Japan next spring and Lotus will be our translator.

Voodoo Doughnut

The kids and I ventured out into the deluge to Portland for a play at the NW Children’s Theater. We saw Sherlock and then stopped by Voodoo Doughnut. The donut shop has become a popular place but we’ve never managed to go before now.

The kids all agree it is above and beyond our usual place, so I guess they are popular for a reason!

Oh, and the play was good too. Although, with no singing and dancing this time, Lotus had a tough time staying focused. Mary Poppins is next and I doubt there will be any trouble paying attention to that one!

Feeding a Family is Hard Work

Never mind the recycling mess but look at all this chopping Jason did for me! Usually once a week I have a list of food stuffs that need to get prepped: bread, a soup, roasted vegetables and maybe some type of snack/dessert.

The roasted veggies get mixed up into a serving bowl and kept in the fridge for lunches, sides and yumminess to throw into the breakfast eggs.

This week was a buffalo chicken soup recipe. It gets divided up into canning jars so we can grab individual portions out of the fridge throughout the week.

Breakfast bars” aka granola bars to eat whenever…

Lately I’ve been making eight loaves of bread instead of four and stocking the freezer. Can you believe this only gives me a two week window? My family of six goes through four loaves per week. I use the amish white bread recipe but only 2 TBS of sugar and varying ratios of whole wheat to white flour…sometimes 100% whole wheat. It seems to work out alright.
